Chapter Ten

Jarrett went home, stayed in Thayne’s bed, and slept for two whole days, woken occasionally by Thayne who thought homemade organic chicken soup would somehow help heal his concussion. Jarrett ate it with relish. Something about the Vicodin the doctor had prescribed before he’d been discharged the day after the concussion made him hungry even if Thayne had snuck some cut up cubes of firm tofu into the soup. Jarrett was certain his lover did it just to piss him off but the soup was so good, it didn’t really matter. He ate it anyway. No way could he turn it down when it made Thayne’s whole apartment smell amazing. The first night they were in the apartment, Jarrett got up and took a shower to wash the stink off him. It was the first one he’d had since before the mission and just standing under the hot spray felt good on his sore muscles. When the spray of the shower hit the lump on the back of his head, it stung, but he didn’t care. The scent of Thayne’s spicy body wash filled his nostrils and gave Jarrett a sense of calm.

Thayne cared for him day and night, letting him sleep, making sure he got his meds when he woke up, and filling the house with amazing smells. The second morning, Jarrett woke up to a plate of blueberry pancakes and three fried eggs that he swallowed down with a strong cup of coffee. They hadn’t talked about the case and that was fine with Jarrett. Every time he tried to remember pertinent details of what had been discussed, he ended up with a throbbing headache. He knew Thayne saw it in his eyes because he kept tucking him into bed every time he felt bad, turning out the light, and crawling in beside him to take him gently into his arms. It was nice being cared for and he appreciated the downtime more than he wanted to admit. He knew he could be himself with Thayne and that was all that mattered. Thayne was home and wherever they were, his lover made him feel complete.

Sometime in the middle of the third night, Jarrett was woken from a deep sleep by a loud thump followed by cursing. He knew immediately what it was. Thayne had somehow rolled away from him during the night and fallen out of bed. The last time that had happened was shortly after they’d met and were hiding out from Virgil, the hired killer who’d been sent to end them.

“Thayne,” he asked into the darkness. The tousled form of his partner sat up and Jarrett saw his silhouette in the darkness as he turned toward him, seated on the carpet. “What’s wrong?”

Thayne grunted and got up, climbing back into the bed and rolling until he was close enough to touch. Jarrett rolled to his side and pulled him into his arms. Thayne’s whole body was covered with a sheen of perspiration.

“I’m sorry I woke you,” he said.
